Victor Maes

Victor Maes is a Belgium-based cinematographer and director working across fiction, documentary, commercials and VR, available for productions worldwide.

He has worked as a camera assistant on feature films and commercials since 2016, including Cowards, Close, Girl, Holly, De Patrick, Nobody Has to Know and The Wolf, the Fox and the Leopard. As a cinematographer, he moves between fiction, documentary and commercial projects. The documentary Ever Since I Have Been Flying, directed by Swiss-Turkish filmmaker Aylin Gökmen, premiered at Locarno and Toronto in 2023.

He is also interested in new technologies such as VR and games, as well as the possibilities of analogue film. He began as a director with an animated short, which led to A Long Goodbye, an interactive VR experience about Ida, an elderly pianist living with dementia. Co-written and co-directed with Kate Voet, the project premiered at the 82nd Venice Film Festival and received the Venice Immersive Achievement Prize. It has since travelled to Film Fest Gent, Thessaloniki Film Festival, IDFA, Clermont-Ferrand, FIPADOC and SXSW, winning several additional awards.

Victor is available worldwide as a cinematographer and director of photography for fiction, documentary, commercials and VR, and is based in Belgium.
